How to Create Website Content for your Business

Creating website content is a challenge for many business owners. Knowing what to say and how to attract an audience to your content is a difficult task. This article tries to simplify this task and give you clear-cut tips to get your content going. Action items such as having a clear goal, understanding your audience, and getting your ideas on paper are all covered in this article.

The goal of this article is to give you some motivation to create website content for your business. Let’s be honest. Even if you are extremely passionate about your business (which I hope you are), it can be difficult at times to curate content for your website, blog page, or social media posts. Plainly put, this process can even be overwhelming and extremely time-consuming if done inefficiently.

Therefore, this article’s overarching goal is to provide clear, actionable steps for you as a business owner to start creating website content. But there is one stipulation. Creating content requires work and time dedication. Just now, I find myself pumping out content for my website at 2 am. Now I’m not saying you need to be a night owl to produce content. Instead, you need the drive and motivation to create this content.

You need to have a passion for what you’re doing.

First things first. You need to have a passion for what you’re doing. If you don’t, the content you create will be mediocre at best and, at worst, will come off as sloppy writing that drives no results. Nothing I tell you in this article can make you passionate about your craft and, in specific, your campground. To find that spark, find that hunger, and get ready to create content that will attract new customers to your campground.

Have a Clear Goal

Have a vision, a goal for the content you are creating. Writing content with no goal, no keyword, no research, and no objective is just as bad as writing no content at all. The content you write should have a purpose, or you will essentially be wasting your time. And as a business owner, you know how valuable your time is. So, when you find yourself wondering how to create content, think about the message you are trying to spread to your audience. Maybe it’s a new feature you are unveiling or maybe a major sale you are doing. Regardless of the content, it needs to have a goal behind it.

Creating good website content requires keyword research. The team at rvResortScout personally uses ahrefs. But we know that can be a bit pricey and out of the budget for many business owners. So we suggest using ahrefs free version Keyword Generator. You won’t get all the features that a paid account will get you, but it’ll point you in the right direction.

So take your time, craft out a goal, and do some research to get you started

Let’s use this article as an example. I found that the majority of campground owners did not know what to write about. They had a tough time generating content and wanted to know how they can get their name out there. That sparked an idea and grew the goal of creating an article outlining how they can begin to create website content. The keyword research generated “website content” as my focus keyword, and from there, I carefully outlined and wrote this article. And guess what, if you’re reading this article, that means it worked. So take your time, craft out a goal, and do some research to get you started.

Understand Your Audience

Being a business owner, you need to understand your audience. Creating website content requires that you speak to your audience in a manner they will understand and can relate to. Only you have the information of the demographics that enter your campground. You also have the ability to shift your tone, word choice, and more to acquire new customers outside of the demographic you typically attract.

Paint a picture of your ideal customer. Before you even begin writing any content, think about what your ideal customer looks like. Is it a family man in his mid-40s looking to take his family on vacation? Or maybe it’s the elderly couple looking for a place to set up for 2-3 months out of the year. Whatever your desired audience is, be sure to specify this before you begin writing. It will help make your writing clearer, more personal, and much more effective.

In writing this article, here is the target audience I was shooting for: Campground owners looking for ways to increase the amount of content they are putting out on the internet. Owners who were struggling to create content and need some tips and insight into getting the ball rolling. Let me know if I hit the nail on the head down in the comments section. If I didn’t, please give me some insight into who you are to better tailor my articles to my audience.

No Need for Long Website Content

Website owners often think they need to write novel-sized content for their audience to be engaged. But think about it. If you stumble across an article on the web that’s 10,000 words long, unless you’re really interested in it, you’re going to skip it and move to the next. The ideal piece of content is in the range of 1,000 words to 2,000 words on the long end. Think of your writing as a conversation you have with your audience. 1,000 words is roughly 8 minutes of speaking time. So a 10-minute conversation in which you are delivering thoughtful content is more than enough to keep your audience engaged.

A well-structured outline can help you stay within the ballpark of 1,000-2,000 words per article. Break down your content into sections and divide 1,500 (the middle of the two numbers) and the number of sections. For example. In this article, there are a total of eight sections. That means for me to remain within my goal, I would have to keep it to roughly 200 words a section. Of course, this is not an exact science. Prioritize good content over the length of your content. The better the content and the value it delivers, the better your article will perform. Here is a list of priorities you can follow:

  1. Writing valuable (information-driven) content
  2. Creating easy to read content
  3. Writing to reach a certain word goal (1,000-2,000 words)

Following these goals will help keep your writing clear, concise, and valuable to your audience.

Write Website Content First Edit Later

Instead of wondering how to create content, write. This simple tip will get you going. Don’t fixate on creating the perfect article, blog post, or social media post. Instead, just let your thoughts flow, and you can perfect them in the editing rounds. Trying to go back and forth between editing and writing can break the flow, result in the loss of ideas and a lot of wasted time.

This is something I struggled with when I first started writing articles and other forms of website content. I wanted everything to be perfect from the start. In reality, it’s just not possible. Even the best writers go through editing rounds to perfect their work. Get the content on the page first and edit later.

Record Your Website Content

Recording your content can be perfect for those people who can’t seem to get their ideas on paper. The writing process can be daunting, and for that reason recording your ideas can be the perfect way to create engaging content for your audience. You can structure this in the form of a podcast, monologue on the topic, or maybe a video presentation on the topic.

Overall the process is the same, but you can create content significantly faster, and it provides your listeners with a completely new experience. Podcasts have become so popular that over 50% of homes consider themselves fans of podcasts. That’s over 60 million homes in the United States. Carve out a slice for yourself and begin engaging with your audience in ways you didn’t think were possible.

Transcriptions

Piggybacking off the previous topic, you can also transcribe your recordings into useable website content. Tools such as HappyScribe.io or Otter.ai have become the go-to tools for transcription services. Using these tools to transcribe your recordings, you can then edit them to create blog posts. This takes most of the heavy lifting out of the process and allows you to focus on quick editing before the content is ready.

These services are easy to use and can save you hundreds of hours in writing content. Otter.ai can even take meeting notes for you and record other important conversations you may be having with your clients.

We Hope You Enjoyed These Tips

By now, you should have a better idea of how to create content for your website. If you don’t, please feel free to reach out to me, and I will do my best to clarify these points further and get you moving in the right direction. We know website content can be difficult to create, and finding that motivation to get started might not always be easy. But the rewards good content can bring are immeasurable. Content can funnel customers to your business for years to come.

The most important thing I can leave you with is this. Just get started. Taking that first step is always the most important. It can be challenging, daunting, and overwhelming at times, but it will be worth it. As a business owner, this is nothing new to you. You have gotten this far using your determination and business acumen. Now channel some of that focus into getting content out to your customers. We look forward to seeing what you can create.
