Creating a Thank You Video for Your Customers

A comprehensive overview on how to create a thank you video. We will cover topics such as writing out a rough plan, having laser focus, keeping it short and sweet, and more. After you read this article you should be well on the way to creating your own thank you video.

A thank you video speaks volumes about the type of business person you want to be. Your customers keep your business alive, and you should thank them for purchasing from you. In reality, there are so many choices for them to make, and they still chose you. Of course, you can send off a thank you email or have an automated thank you waiting for your customer. But that doesn’t even compare to the effectiveness of a video. Creating a thank you video should be a genuine experience that you can share with your customers. This article will cover the basics of making a thank you video, and we will use examples of how rvResortScout uses the power of thank you videos in our business.

Don't underestimate the power of thank you videos in our business.

Adding value to your business is what every business owner should strive to do.

Before we explore the nuances of creating a thank, you video let’s discuss why they are so important. Besides the genuine feel that a well-made video can convey to your customers, you also benefit from repeat purchases, positive reviews, and a stronger connection with your customers. All of these increase your customer's lifetime value and the overall perception of your business. Adding value to your business is what every business owner should strive to do. So, let’s see what it takes to create one.

Write Out a Rough Plan

While having an authentic video is extremely important, having a rough idea of what you will be talking about is necessary. You don’t want to be stumbling around while recording your video, wondering what you’re going to say next. Instead, you should draft out some bullet points that will serve as a guide as you talk through the video. This doesn't need to be perfect, but it does need to keep you on track.

Here’s an example of a script you could potentially follow:

  1. Introduce yourself and the company (2-3 sentences)
  2. Thank your customer for making the purchase. Let them know how valuable their business is to you. (4-6 sentences)
  3. Congratulate them on their purchase and list 1-2 benefits that they will immediately see from using your product/service. (2-3 sentences)
  4. A quick thank you again, and you look forward to hearing their reviews on your service/product. You also look forward to doing business with them in the near future. (1-2 sentences).

Notice on the long end your thank you video is near 14 sentences. Roughly a minute to a minute and a half of speaking or two paragraphs of written text. Thank you videos do not need to belong. They need to be genuine, to the point and show appreciation.

Keep it Short and Sweet

Do not go on a long rant about you, your company, or your amazing products. Yes, we get it. You’re amazing, your company is amazing, and what you have to offer is amazing. The problem is that's not what the video is for. A quick summary of yourself and your company is okay as long as you stay on track and focus on the main objective of the video: thanking your customers. I have seen so many thank you videos that start with the right intent but turn into monologues about how great they are and what their company is doing. DO NOT GO THAT ROUTE. Chances are you’ll come off as egotistical, and that's the opposite of what this video is striving for. Let your product or service speak for itself.

Don’t Be Too Perfect in Your Thank You Video

People have become obsessed with perfection. And honestly, perfection is the key to many things. But not in a thank you video. A thank you video should not come off as a robotic script that has been meticulously planned. Each word, each breath, and each movement should not be scripted. Instead, let your body flow and talk to the customer as if you were thanking someone from the bottom of your heart. Your customers, after all, are the lifeblood of your business.

Flaws mean you’re human. And guess what, people appreciate people who are genuine and have flaws.

Your personality should shine through, flaws and all. Flaws mean you’re human. And guess what, people appreciate people who are genuine and have flaws. An overly polished performance can create a disconnect between you and your audience. Embrace your personality quirks, and all while creating a thank you video. Trust me; your audience will thank you for it.

Tip: Leaving your flaws in does not mean allowing 10 seconds to go by before you think of what to say next or speaking in a way that will not connect to your audience. Instead, it means, be you. If you stutter, look a bit nervous, or are camera shy, don’t worry. Let your personality shine through.

Personalize Your Thank You Video

Here’s where many business owners take shortcuts. They will create a thank you video and send it out to every person purchased from them. What's the mistake here? No personalization. People want to feel important, and a generic message doesn’t do the trick. We know it's a lot of work, and if you have hundreds or thousands of customers, it might be impossible. This is where you need to determine who truly needs a thank you video.

These videos should be sent to your most important customers, letting them know how much they mean to you. Customers that are in the top 10% in customer lifetime value. When you create these messages, be sure to use their name, mention something about their specific product or service, and acknowledge that this is a personalized message.

Pro Tip: If you’re a really busy business owner, this is something you can delegate to senior staff.

Of course, it helps when the owner is in the personalized message but having one of your top team members handle this responsibility can be just as effective. As a campground owner, you may only have one product or service: your campground. If that's the case, it might even be a good idea to create a video library with 50 of the most common names. That will allow you to send those videos off in just a few clicks instead of creating a new video every time someone books a spot.
